The most beautiful sights in Castellane

Castellane: a must-see!

Castellane is a beautiful town in sunny Provence. This historic fortified town is located on the Verdon River. Domaine Castellane, a luxury Villa Parcs holiday park, is located just outside the village of Castellane. From this holiday park, you can easily explore this town. Castellane boasts a number of wonderful sights that we don't want to keep from you. In this blog, we would like to share some tips with you.

Gorges du Verdon

Gorges du Verdon is Europe's largest gorge and thus world-famous. It is one of France's most impressive natural wonders. This gorge is about a 45-minute drive from Castellane. The Gorges du Verdon is 25 kilometres long and up to 300 metres deep! Moreover, the rock walls can reach up to 700 metres high. Around the gorge you will find several hiking, cycling and mountain biking routes. From these routes, you will have breathtaking views of the beautiful azure water. It is also possible to admire the gorge from the water. This can be done by kayak, rowing boat, canoe or motorboat. There are also small sheltered beaches where you can swim.

Notre Dame du Roc Chapel

On top of a rock you will find a beautiful chapel; Notre Dame du Roc. When you are in Castellane, you cannot miss the rock. The chapel, which you can enter for free, dates from the 12th century and can be reached via a footpath from Castellane town centre. It is a short but beautiful walk of about 45 minutes. During the walk, you can already admire the chapel from a distance. At the top of the rock, you will be treated to fantastic views over the town of Castellane and the surrounding mountains. The chapel is always open and you can ring the bell yourself. Candles are provided and you can leave your name in the guest book.

Lac du Castillon

Within walking distance of Domaine Castellane is Lac de Castillon, a lake with a length of no less than 16 kilometres! It is the second largest reservoir in the area. Only Lac de Sainte Croix is larger. The lake was created by the construction of a dam and is known for its typical azure water. There are several swimming beaches around the lake, but you can also take to the water in a pedalo, canoe, sailing boat or motorboat. The village of Saint Julien du Verdon is also located on the lake. Here you can practice various water sports, as well as rafting. For a nice walk, this is also the place to be. There are several hiking trails that take you through beautiful forests and along magnificent water features. From the road next to the lake you have a view of the 95-metre-high Verdon gorge.

Citroën Museum

The Citroën museum is located just outside Castellane. Here you will find a collection of as many as 80 Citroëns in original condition. This museum in Castellane therefore has the largest collection of Citroëns in the world! The models range from the 2CV to the SM and the models still have very low mileage. There are also some famous and rare models, such as the DS 32. You will find not only a collection of cars, but also a collection of number plates, flags, documents and posters. So are you a Citroën and/or car enthusiast? Then this is an absolute must when you are in Castellane. A visit to this museum is also great fun with children. You can combine it with a visit to the Crêperie in Rougon.

The town of Castellane

The town of Castellane alone is a cool place to visit. Among other things, Castellane is known for its narrow medieval streets. The atmosphere in the town is typically Provençal: overgrown squares, many terraces, old houses and cosy shops. A Provencal market is organised twice a week. Here you will find various regional products. In Castellane, you will also find two special churches: the Eglise Sacre-Coeur and Eglise Saint Victor. Finally, a short distance from the village you will find an old stone bridge: Pont du Roc. This bridge dates back to the 15th century. Castellane is also called 'the gateway to the Verdon'.
